Preparation is in top gear in Obosi, an ancient town less than three kilometers from the eastern end of the Niger Bridge, as this year’s Obiora Obosi is barely two weeks away.

The 2019 new yam festival is also special as the town that has consistently produced ministers at the federal cabinet within two administrations, will yet again honour one of their own, Chief Sharon Ikeazor, who was sworn-in as the Minister of State, Environment.

This aspect of the event will be attracting dignitaries from within Anambra state and top government officials from parts of the country.

In the previous administration of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, Chief Osita Chidoka, a prominent son of the town, was the Minister of Aviation after serving as the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission for over five years.

Even before the two administrations mentioned, Obosi has contributed prominently in nation building. One of the very few individuals that occupied two ministerial positions in the history of the country is renowned Engineer, Chief Dan Chuke, Affa Obosi. He was minister of special duties and minister of defence during the Olusegun Obasanjo led government.

This year’s Obiora Obosi which will hold on Saturday, October 5, at the Obosi Stadium will begin at 10am.

Traditional ruler of the town, Igwe Chukwudubem Iweka, Eze Iweka III, Eze Obosi, will perform the annual ‘iwa ji’ ceremony where he declares the new yam fit for consumption.

The event will feature cultural displays by groups from Obosi and environs.

After the general event led by the Igwe, all the distinguished titled men in the Igwe’s cabinet known as Ndi Ichie, as representatives of various families, are expected to hold smaller events in their domain where feasting and merry making is the main feature.

Obiora Obosi is the second most popular festival in the ancient kingdom of Obosi after the ‘Ito Ogbo’ celebration. The last edition of the triennial ceremony that celebrates longevity held in 2018.

Part of the activities will also include the exclusive dance of the ‘egwu ota’ by Ndi Ichie Obosi.

Expectations are that some of those who made Nigeria proud in various spheres and are honoured as Ndi Ichie, will step to that dignified music produced from giant wooden gongs reserved for only the initiated.

Former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyoku, Adazie Obosi, will be in attendance. Pioneer of private satellite broadcasting in Nigeria, Chief Mike Ajegbo, Ede Obosi will be there to dance to Egwu Ota. Former CEO and Managing Director of Keystone Bank PLC, Chief Philip Ikeazor who holds the title of Ozima Obosi will also be there. And many more.
