The Court Of Appeal has upheld the decision of a high court sentencing Ibinabo Fiberesima to five years imprison for causing the death of a medical doctor, Giwa Suraj.

The court dismissed the appeal filed by Ms Fiberesima, who is the President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria and former beauty queen challenging the judgement of a Lagos  state High Court.

Justice Deborah Oluwayemi had sentenced her to five years for reckless driving which caused the death of one Dr. Giwa Suraj in an auto accident along the Lekki-Epe expressway, Lagos.

The appellate court dismissed the appeal and affirmed the decision of the Lagos High Court saying the appeal lacked merit.

There are indications that the embattled actress will explore one last chance of staying away from prison as her lawyer Nnaemeka Amaechina said the judgment of the Court of Appeal will be challenged at the Supreme Court adding that a Notice of Appeal had been filed already.

Ms Fiberesima had earlier been awarded a N100,000 fine as an option to a jail term by an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court. Lagos state government then took the matter before the state high court where Justice Oluwayemi described the Magistrate as being reckless in his verdict.

The court ordered that the N100,000 be returned to the actress and held that she should be committed to 5 years imprison for reckless driving.
