The Independent National Electoral Commission has warned that announcing or publishing a false election result is a criminal offence,  punishable by a term of imprisonment.

Through its twitter handle @inecnigeria, the commission said the official result will be uploaded on the commission's site as soon as they are announced by the returning officers.

INEC has frowned at a situation where politicians and their allies publish through the social media, purported election results which are false and misleading.

The commission warns the public to retrain from such and wait for the formal declaration of results from authorised persons.
