The speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Acho Ihim has been suspended by 21 out of 27 lawmakers. He was immediately replaced by Chinedu Offor of the Action Alliance as the interim speaker.

Ihim’s suspension came after reading a letter announcing the lifting of the suspension placed on the 27 Local Government chairmen by the state lawmakers last week, adjourned the ongoing plenary and escaped with the mace.

The Lawmakers objected to the letter announcing the lifting of the suspension of the 27 LGA chairmen quoting Order 15 of the House Rule, which empowers lawmakers to contribute to issues before the Speaker rules, but Ihim said that no lawmaker was allowed to contribute to the matter.

The suspension of the Majority Leader of the House, Lugard Osuji was also announced and Lloyd Chukwuemeka (Owerri North) elected in his place.

Speaking to journalists, the Acting Speaker said that the 21 lawmakers had served impeachment notices on Acho Ihim and Lugard Osuji.

Despite all Ihim’s efforts which includes ordering his aides to switch off the generator supplying electricity to the complex to stop his colleagues from removing him, but the angry lawmakers still impeached him and Osuji.
