Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were conspicuously absent from the FIFA Awards held in London on September 24 where Croatian captain, Luka Modric was awarded the FIFA footballer of the year.

This did not go down well with former Real Madrid and Juventus manager, Fabio Capello who stated that it is lack of respect for the stars to boycott the award that they dominated for a decade. He said;

"The absence of Ronaldo and Messi? It is a lack of respect, for the players, for FIFA and for the world of football,"  "It is possible that they won too much and do not like to lose. In life you have to be good when you win and when you lose."
