Finnish telecoms equipment maker Nokia more than doubled its profits in the third quarter as its new chief executive promised on Thursday to do “whatever it takes” to become the 5G market leader.

On his first results day since taking the reins of the Finnish networks giant in August, Pekka Lundmark vowed to beat rivals Ericsson and Huawei in the 5G market.

“In those areas we choose to compete, we will play to win,” he told reporters. “We will do whatever it takes to lead in 5G and we are ready to invest more.”

The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) says it is working vigorously with multi-sector stakeholders to formulate policies for the 5th generation (5G) mobile network.

The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof. Umaru Danbatta, made this known on Wednesday during a virtual innovative tech forum organised by Nigeria Information Technology Reporters Association (NITRA).

The theme of the event was ‘Multi-Stakeholders Approach to National Recovery Post-Pandemic’.

Britain was expected Tuesday to approve the phased removal of Chinese telecoms giant Huawei from its 5G network, a decision long sought by Washington but resisted by Beijing.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson was chairing meetings of his cabinet and the National Security Council, with an expected decision on the issue from 1130 GMT.

Last week, China warned Britain it could face repercussions in terms of its international reputation as a trading nation if it backed down on Huawei.
