A Lagos-based Human Rights Lawyer, Mr. Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, says the charges pending before the Code of Conduct Tribunal against the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, are illegal.

Adegboruwa on Monday in Lagos described the entirety of the process as “unconstitutional, illegal, null and void;” adding that same ought to and should be withdrawn forthwith.

Onnoghen was arraigned on Monday, January 14 before the CCT, following six counts of allegations of failure to declare his assets.

The proceedings involving charges of non-declaration of assets against the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Onnoghen has been adjourned till January 22 following the absence of the CJN at today’s proceedings.

The Danladi Umar led Code of Conduct tribunal adjourned the case on the grounds that the CJN was improperly served as he was not personally served with the charges and summons as required by law.

He therefore requested that a fresh service be directed to the CJN personally as against the previous one which was served through Justice Onnoghen’s personal assistant

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, failed to appear before the Danladi Umar led  tribunal over his alleged refusal to declare his assets.

The charge marked CCT/ABJ/01/19 was called up at exactly 10am with the Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Danladi Umar demanding to know why the CJN was absent and if he was served with the charges and summons.

The court official confirmed that the CJN was served through his personal assistant, stating that the defendant directed his personal assistant to collect the charge on his behalf at his house.
