Sixteen people were killed and 15 injured Thursday when a bus collided with a refrigerated lorry in western Senegal, emergency services said.

Nine women were among the fatalities in the accident, which occurred around 2 a.m. in the Thies region about 60 kilometres (35 miles) from the capital Dakar.

The bus, with a 60-seat capacity, was heading to Rosso near the border with Mauritania, the fire brigade said, adding that the number of people on board was unknown.

Local media said the truck was hauling fish to Dakar.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday hosted Presidents Macky Sall of Senegal and Umaro Embalo of Guinea Bissau to a private dinner at the State House, Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that the two West African leaders are in Abuja on official engagements when the Nigerian leader invited them for the dinner.

NAN reports that the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, some cabinet members as well as presidential aides also attended the dinner.

Senegal announced five new cases of novel coronavirus Thursday, bringing the West African state’s total number to ten, and making it the worst affected country in the region.   

The five new cases are all family members of a Senegalese national whom health authorities declared positive for the virus on Wednesday.

The man, who is normally resident in Italy, had been in Senegal’s second-largest city Touba when he exhibited symptoms and visited a doctor, the health ministry said.
