The National Economic Council has been informed of the list of 500 tax dodgers made up of some prominent citizens with investments abroad.

Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, explained that such Nigerians can take advantage of the Voluntary Assets & Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) to settle past taxation defaults.

“Letters would soon be going out to these Nigerians, including a number of prominent ones, asking them to take advantage of the tax amnesty in order to avoid prosecution and fines by simply paying up their tax defaults,” she said.

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has shut 13 hotels, restaurants and event centers for failure to pay their taxes due under the Hotel Occupancy and Restaurant Consumption Laws of Lagos State 2009. The Hotels and Restaurants were said to be owing the State a sum of N426,976,528.87

Spanish prosecutors have filed a formal lawsuit against Real Madrid striker, Cristiano Ronaldo for tax evasion.

According to prosecutors the Portuguese used his “business structure” to defraud the state amounts nearing £13m.

Prosecutors alleged that Ronaldo had defrauded the tax authorities of €1.4m in 2011, €1.7m in 2012, €3.2m in 2013 and €8.5m in 2014.

The lawsuit is based on a report sent to the prosecutor’s office from Spain’s tax agency AEAT,

Neither Ronaldo nor Real Madrid has agreed to comment on the matter.
