A more transmissible variant of the coronavirus that was identified in South Africa has been detected for the first time on US soil, officials said Thursday.

The cases were found in the state of South Carolina in two adults with no travel history and no connection to each other, according to a statement.

“The arrival of the SARS-CoV-2 variant in our state is an important reminder to all South Carolinians that the fight against this deadly virus is far from over,” said Brannon Traxler, the interim public health director of the state’s health department.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, says Nigeria will vigorously  engage the U.S. government to remove it’s name from its blacklist of countries over concern on religious freedom.

The foreign affairs ministry said  Nigerian government remained committed to ensuring  respect and protection of all citizens’ right to religious freedom and promotion of religious tolerance and harmony.

The Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ferdinand Nwonye, in a statement issued in Abuja, said the decision by the United States to include Nigeria on the list came as a surprise.

China’s top diplomat on Monday called for the resumption of talks with the incoming US administration of president-elect Joe Biden, as relations between the world’s two largest economies continued to nosedive.

Beijing and Washington have locked horns over issues from trade and China’s human rights record to its expansionist ambitions in the South China Sea.

But speaking during a video call with the board of the US-China Business Council (USCBC) on Monday, foreign minister Wang Yi said “the two sides should work together.”
