There will be no public access to the Capitol grounds during Joe Biden’s inauguration as U.S. president on Jan. 20, acting Capitol Police chief Yogananda Pittman said.

Pittman took over the leadership from Steven Sund after he stepped down amid criticism of the force’s handling of rioters who breached the Capitol building last week.

She said law enforcement from the federal, state and local levels were working together and comprehensive, coordinated plans were in place to ensure safety.

President Donald Trump announced Friday he will skip Joe Biden’s inauguration in a final, unrepentant act of division as his presidency imploded amid demands that he step aside for the last 12 days in office.

“To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th,” the US leader said on Twitter.

The statement, while not a surprise from the most divisive president in decades, drew a line through any idea that Trump might seek to spend his remaining moments in the White House helping his Democratic successor calm tensions.

US President Donald Trump has pledged an “orderly transition” of power after the Congress on Thursday affirmed Joe Biden’s win in November’s presidential poll.

The President spoke after his efforts to overturn the Nov. 3 election have come to naught with the global community condemning the violence by his supporters at the U.S. Capitol,

“Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election,” Trump said in a statement released by a White House official on social media, “nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th.”
