Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife have been ordered out of the campus while the gate will remain closed for now.
Independent sources say the school was shut due to constant disruption of activities on the campus by protesting workers of the Non Academic Staff Union who keep protesting over one issue or the other.
However the University authorities say the closure has nothing to do with workers protest. Public Relations Officer of the University, Biodun Olarewaju said the University only declared mid semester break.
“At the emergency meeting today, the senate has approved that the management give the students mid-semester break, not closure. We will communicate to you in due course. The students should enjoy their Sallah celebration.” The PRO said.
A source from the University told HOMELAND NEWS that during the last protest by the non-academic workers over a 64-month unpaid hazard allowance, the senate building, library and other key arm of the University was shut. The source said the main gate of the institution was also locked up for a week.
Despite the step taken by the authority so far, the workers union is threatening that except their demands are met, they will embark on a total lock-down of the school soon.
