US President, Barrack Obama has praised President Muhammadu Buhari for coming to office with his reputation for integrity intact and a very clear agenda. He made the remark at the meeting between the two leaders on the heel of Pres. Buhari’s 4-day official visit to the US.
In the words of the US President, “And that is to make sure that he is bringing safety and security and peace to his country.”
President Obama recognized the conduct and outcome of the 2015 elections as “an affirmation of Nigeria‘s commitment to democracy.”
He advised President Buhari to combine military action against boko haram with social and economic programmes.
President Obama who held talks with the Nigerian leader at the White House in Washington dc said Africa’s destiny is tied to that of Nigeria.
According to him, the US was ready to stand with Nigeria, as long as it remains on course. He advised President Buhari to turn Nigeria’s diversity to a source of strength, adding that a divided country never succeeds.
President Buhari in his response, said pressure from the US helped ensure that the last elections in Nigeria were free, fair and credible. “We will ever be grateful,” the President said.
