The deplorable condition of the two federal roads that transverse Ikwuano community in Abia state have suddenly become a nightmare for the people of the area.
Since the collapse of the Umuahia-Ikot-Ekpene road, motorists diverted to the use of another one known as Amizi–oloko road as an alternative.
However, because of pressure caused by heavy vehicular traffic on this road which was abandoned shortly after it was awarded by the federal government about three years ago, the road became impassable.
Movement from one place to another within the community and outside has become almost impossible.
With the repairs ongoing on the Umuahia-Ikot-Ekpene road, traffic has reduced on the Amizi–Oloko road but the effects of the period of heavy usage are unimaginable as social, economic and even religious activities in Amizi community have become nonexistent.
The traditional ruler of the of the community, His Royal highness, Eze Eugene Ndimele in an interview appealed to both the Federal and state governments to come to their aid as they are about being cut off from other communities in the state.
He said it would not be good for that part of the world to be forgotten by people in authority, adding that they understand the efforts of government in providing infrastructure to the people.
On his part, the President General of the of Amizi Development Union, Chief Sam Ekpo regretted that their women have become helpless as their farm produce are no longer sold with no one coming to their market to purchase.
He said both their health and education of their children suffer as a result of the road as accessing various parts of the community is difficult.
Also the youth leader and woman leader, Mr. Joseph Chinedu and Mrs. Christiana Ekpo lamented their fate and called the government to assist them as a matter of urgency.
