From Ejike Chinedu, Lagos
23 years after he died in an accident while on a campaign process to become governor of Anambra State in 1992, his son, Chuka is emerging as the leading voice of the Labour Party in United Kingdom. British media had reported that Ben was assassinated because he refused to pay bribes in Nigeria.
Ben Osi Umunna, was a London based businessman whose love for sports was quite pronounced. He rose to become a director at Crystal Palace Football Club after investing about 50,000 British pounds in the club. He was also the Chairman of the Enugu Rangers International Football Club in the 80s.
Ben was one of the young Nigerians who travelled to the UK in search of greener pastures in the mid 60s. He arrived Liverpool by ship before moving to London through a stranger assistance. He made a fortune through his import and export business between Europe and West Africa.
He got married to Patricia, an Anglo Irish solicitor in 1976.
In 2010, Ben Osi Umunna’s son, Chuka was elected into the British Parliament. He has just won a second term election in a poll the Labour Party did not perform as expected. Chuka Umunna is not just returning to the parliament but is being considered as the likely leader of the opposition party.
We will run a full profile of the 37 year old Nigerian British parliamentarian and monitor his development as a global politician and community leader.
