A full blown clash between operatives of the Department of State Service and commercial bus drivers was today averted in Ekiti state by the intervention of the State Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu.
Trouble started when a DSS member came on a motorbike and fired
several gun shots at Fajuyi area of Ado Ekiti, where commercial drivers gathered to resolve an earlier incident of transport fare between them and some students of the State University.
The drivers who were annoyed at the incident challenged the security
agent that had called for reinforcement, the matter soon snowballed into crisis.
An eye witness, Aderemi Falegan told newsmen that a team of DSS
got to the scene and started shooting instead of providing solution to
the incident.
He said the students told the Akoto drivers they would want to pay N70 per passenger
as against the N100 being the regular fare.
It would be recalled that the students of the university had demanded a reduction in the number of passengers conveyed in the buses at a time. They had asked the drivers to consider their comfort by taking 7 passengers as against 10 at a ride.
