Events surrounding the burial of the mother of Billionaire businessman, Obi Iwegbu, known popularly as Obi Cubana has continued to generate reactions.
Rights group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, has asked the Central Bank Nigeria to leave persons accused of abusing the Naira at the funeral of socialite Obi Cubana’s mum alone and expose people financing terrorism across the nation.
Hundreds of Obi Cubana’s friends and associates last weekend stormed his home town Oba, in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra state, to support him during the funeral.
They had freely sprayed cash to the provocation of those who feel the act amounts to abuse of the currency.
The CBN has a rule to prosecute people who as suspected to have handled the naira in a ‘disrespectful’ manner.
But in a statement, HURIWA said the spraying of naira at Obi Cubana’s event should not constitute a major talking point.
The statement signed by the group’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, added that there have been countless high societal functions where the naira was also abused.
“The fact that friends and well-wishers who attended the event decided to show appreciation to Mr Obi Cubana, we in the Human Rights Writers Association Of Nigeria, think it should not become the talking point.
“The Central Bank of Nigeria under the current dispensation should rather be tasked by the media to confront the much more disturbing issue of how terrorism is funded and how armed kidnappers made up of Fulani militia in the North carry out their terrorism-related activities.” the statement read
