The Federal Government will commence confiscation and destruction of unregistered locally produced gin otherwise referred to as Ogogoro.
The exercise which will take place nationwide will affect locally made betters and other alcoholic beverages.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control and the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control made this known on Monday in Abuja.
The Director-General of NAFDAC, Dr Paul Orhii, who spoke the event, said government’s decision was aimed at containing the increasing number of deaths caused by the consumption of the drink.
“We are also warning members of the public to avoid the consumption of all kinds of locally produced spirits, unregistered bitters and related drinks for now,’’ Orhii said.
