Senator Buruji kashamu can be likened to the proverbial cat with nine lives as the federal court in Abuja dismissed the application seeking his extradition to the United States of America over allegations of illegal drug dealings which took place about 20 years ago.
Justice Gabriel Kolawole ruled that the court lacks the jurisdiction to entertain the suit even as a judgment of the same court in the Lagos division still subsists. It was the position of the court that it cannot sit over the matter until the particular judgment and another from the same judge in Lagos is set aside by the appellate court.
Justice Okon Abang had on the 8th of June, while sitting in Lagos, nullified the extradition preceding which he said runs fowl of an earlier order of the court.
Justice Kolawole’s had described the judgment as “wild and audacious,” but insisted that it is only the court of appeal that can decided on the rightness or otherwise of the judgment.
Buruji Kashamu has escaped being arrested and extradited by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on behalf of the Federal Government. The agency said there is a request by the US for the Ogun State born senator to be returned to the country for trial.
