Concerns have continued to be raised over the perceived desperation of political players as the elections remains in focus. Even after the postponement of the date, there are speculations which sometimes are subtly supported by happenings, that the elections may not hold eventually.
Now, All Progressives Congress caucus in the Senate has raised alarm over alleged plot by the People’s Democratic Party led Federal Government to sack the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission Professor Attahiru Jega next week.
The caucus at press conference addressed by the Senate Minority Leader, George Akume said the plot is contained in a letter to be issued by the Head of Service asking Professor Jega to proceed on pre-retirement leave.
The APC caucus said the planned removal of Prof. Jega is capable of derailing the forth coming general election adding that only dishonest politicians will seek Professor Jega’s removal at this critical time.
The caucus however said that President Goodluck Jonathan has constitutional powers to remove the INEC Chairman but he should follow constitutional process which include two-third majority of the Senate before he can be removed.
There were rumours that Prof. Jega will not supervise the general election as the commission’s chairman. But President Jonathan in the most recent media chat debunked the claim. The President said he has the power to remove the INEC Chairman since he appointed him but denied any plan to do so.
