Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka has appealed to the Federal Ministry of health to ensure the prompt release of N400m appropriated in the 2011 budget for the establishment of cancer centre in Nigeria.
Prof. Soyinka who was speaking at an interactive session with Journalists in Abeokuta on menace of cancer, equally urged Government to fast track the establishment of Cancer Control Centres across Nigeria in order to control the growing rate of the disease.
The increasing cases of cancer disease in Nigeria has continue to generate series of concern among stakeholders calling on government to rise up to the challenge.
Prof. Soyinka also said Nigerians should not see the disease as a death sentence but should take up the responsibility of going for test in order to ensure early discovery and treatment of cancer.
He disclosed that he was diagnosed of cancer in 2013 and added that he has been treated of the disease and so took up the challenge of embarking on massive campaign for early discovery and treatment of cancer.
Prof Soyinka appealed to Nigerian to undergo cancer test as he had done adding that, though the treatment of the disease is capital intensive but the country is blessed enough to established cancer centres, which would make it easy for Nigerians to receive medical attention
