From Steph Clem, Umuahia
Hundreds of members of All Progressives Congress in Abia state have dumped the party to join the People’s Democratic Party.
Since the creation of APC and its introduction to the state, there have been leadership tussle among members over who becomes the leader of the party in the state.
The recent decamping of some of its members may not be unconnected with the fact that the national leadership apparently in an effort to settle the crisis recognised only one faction of the party.
This action will no doubt create worries for the leadership in the state since it is still seeking more memberships.
The decamped members in their numbers stormed the PDP state secretariat located on Finbars road in Umuahia to express their desire to return to the party they once left.
Spokesperson of the group, Egwuatu Egbulefu regretted that their sojourn in APC was unfruitful and wasteful, as what they hoped for from the party was hardly met by the national leadership of the party.
He said that it was obvious that they made a mistake joining the party as they would later discover that it was an association of aggrieved persons who had various selfish interest and agenda in the party
According to Mr. Egbulefu, part of their admiration of the present government stems from the fact that the governor has brought back peace into the polity with some of his policies which included, the support for a successor from Abia south senatorial zone among others.
While receiving the returning members, state chairman, Emma Nwaka, deputy chairman, Allen Nwachukwu and Secretary, Charles Eseonu, commended them for taking the bold step to return and assured them that they would not be treated like strangers.
He promised them that with their return to the party, all their rights and privileges would be restored.
To show that they no longer belong to the party, the members performed a symbolic burning of their party cards and flags as well as their party symbol; the brooms.
