Senator-elect for the Kogi West senatorial zone, Dino Melaye has called for a cut in the remuneration of members of the National Assembly. Mr. Melaye was speaking on the heels of the induction ceremony for in-coming senators held in Abuja.
Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has repeatedly warned that citizens should prepared for some tough economic policies geared towards saving the country’s economy from collapse.
Mr. Melaye said that it will amount to the height of irresponsibility for members of the National Assembly insulate themselves from the harsh economic realities and continue to earn huge salaries that cannot be justified. He called on his colleagues to individually and collectively prepare to lead the way in making the sacrifice for the over-riding interest of the country.
“What we are saying is that we cannot pretend that all is well and it will be unfair to call for sacrifice without leading the way”.
The Senator-elect also condemned what he called “evil collaboration” between federal legislators and the Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
He said it will be immoral for legislators to demand or receive any form of sponsorship or logistic support from agencies of government while carrying out their over-sight functions.
