The Edo State High Court has sentenced a police corporal, Joseph Omotosho, to death by hanging or chemical infusion, for the murder of a suspect while in custody.
The convict and four others were operatives attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad when in 2015, they tortured one Benson Obodeh, accused of stealing, to death in Benin.
Other accused persons are Adeleke Adedeji, Oniyo Musa, Abena John and Henry Shobowale
The SARS operative deposited the corpse at the morgue in Central Hospital Benin and tagged the corpse by a wrong name, Benson Agu. It took several months before the family of the deceased could trace the corpse.
They then travelled to Port Harcourt and, on 22nd and 23rd May 2015, used the deceased’s ATM card to withdraw the sum of ₦350,000.00 from his account.
Four of the defendants escaped during the “prison break” that was part of EndSARS protests when two Correctional Centres in Benin and Oko were destroyed on the 19th of October, 2020.
Only Joseph Omotosho, was in custody as at the time of the Judgment.
The court deferred judgment of the four fleeing suspects until they are caught and present in court.
