Following several months of nonpayment of salaries by the 18 local governments of Edo State, the National Union Of Local Government Employees, NULGE ,led by the National President, Comrade Ibrahim khaleel, stormed Edo State to protest and demand salary arrears owed local government workers.
Traffic grounded to halt for several hours as motorists found it difficult to manover their way out of the protest.
However commercial activities was also grounded while the protest lasted around kings square in Benin City.
The protesters carried banners and placards lamenting the failure of the local government authorities to pay the outstanding salary ranging from 2 to 18 months.
Speaking while receiving the National Chairman of NULGE in government house, Adams Oshiomhole said it is not the duty of the state government to pay local government workers, adding that all workers in the payroll of the state government are being paid as at when due.
He said the 18 local government in Edo State are autonomous and as such, he has no business in their nonpayment of salaries.
He accused the union in the state of complicity of nonpayment of their workers salaries by indulging in an illegal employments of more workers with the authorities of the local governments resulting to over wage bill.
On his part, the National President of NULGE, Comrade Ibrahim khaleel said they are in Edo State in solidarity with the local governments workers in the state to protest and demand the immediate payment of their salaries arrears.
