The Deputy Editor of People’s Daily and National President of Association of Igede Professional Media Group, Mr. Sunday EGENA Odeh was whisked away by armed men to unknown destination at Karu, Abuja in the evening of Friday, April 30, 2021.
According to report by an eye witness, armed men who proclaimed to be acting at the behest of the Governor of Benue State, Dr Samuel Ortom picked up the President of the Igede Media Professionals Assocation, Mr Sunday Egena Odeh. They told Mr Odeh that the Governor wanted to see him in connection with his press statements.
The Igede Media Professionals Association of which Mr Odeh is President, has been critical of the way Dr Ortom has handled security issues in Benue State, especially between the Bonta Tiv ( where 12 soldiers were killed in cold blood) in Konshisha Local and Ukpute of Oju Local government Area, all of Benue State.
All effort to reach out to the PRO of the group as at the press time proved abortive.
Acting on information on anonymous informer, it said “Dr Ortom had reportedly threatened to deal with Mr. Sunday Odeh over the association’s criticism.”
“Mr Odeh shared this information with a few confidants when this information filtered to him,” the statement added.
He was arrested along side his cousin, Johnson Ubeh who was later released when Sunday Egena Odeh showed up.
“The fellows that arrested him said they were police and DSS personnel. They said they were taking him to the Governor in Makurdi.”
We are worried that harm may come the way of Sunday Egena Odeh given the fury of the Governor and his self-professed/confessed past.
As stated earlier, his arrest is not unconnected with the groups views on the sloppy handling of the crisis between Bonta in Konshisha and Ukpute in Oju Local Governments area of Benue which snowballed into the killing of twelve soldiers.
The group in a statement yesterday called on Gov. Samuel Ortom for his immediate release as he is advised to concentrate on the governance of the state and ensure that the lives of every Benue state indigene is safe irrespective of his tribe, religion and political colouration.
Governor Orton should ensure that Sunday EGENA’s life is safe where ever he keeps him, the group further stressed.
In recent time Sunday EGENA, had been on the radar of Ortom- led administration as he was not comfortable with the position of the group in relation to the security situations in Benue state.
His last story before the arrest was published in Peoples’Daily of 30th April 2021( page 4) titled:”BENUE KILLINGS- Buhari Frowns at accusations, warns Ortom to stop playing politics with lives”.
