From Paul Ibe, Enugu

The All Progressives Congress in Enugu state has raised alarm over the alleged existence of “killer squad” in the state with specific instruction to assassinate its political aspirants.

The party also alleged the destruction of its gubernatorial candidate, Okey Ezea’s campaign billboards and that of a House of Representative candidate in Nsukka zone of the state by suspected political thugs of the PDP.

Addressing a press conference in Enugu Monday, Dr. Ben Nwoye, the State Chairman of APC, said they have officially lodged complaints to the appropriate security agencies over the sad developments.

“Before the primary people were wondering if Gburugburu (Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP guber candidate) and other candidates were the only candidates in Enugu.

“But immediately after Okey Ezea emerged, we kicked off our publicity by mounting billboards, the billboards were to advertize our candidate, to tell the world that here is our candidate”.

“Unfortunately, the evil makers and those who are interested in ensuring that there will be no democracy in Enugu and who have indeed found their own safe haven in PDP, who have perfected these acts of evil from 1999 to present day; they resurrected last night and went on a rampage, they destroyed billboards mounted by us to advertise our guber candidate, Okey Ezea in this case at Nsukka”.

Dr. Nwoye, while appealing to members of the party not to retaliate, called on the national leadership of PDP and the presidency not to turn Enugu into Rivers State, where he alleged such acts of violence and destruction of APC billboards happen daily.

However, every attempt by our Correspondent to get reactions of the PDP or its candidate, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi hit the rock, as they could not respond to several calls put across to their mobile phones before the story was sent in.
