Low turnout of voters characterized local government elections held in the 22 local government of Rivers State. Reports of heavy rainfall in the early hours of Saturday also made it difficult for voters to participate in the election.
In many of the polling units visited during the period of voting in Port Harcourt city and Obio/Akpor local government areas, residents were seen going about their normal businesses despite the restriction of movement announced by the Rivers state police command.
HOMELAND NEWS gathered that some residents felt that the controversies that preceded the exercise suggested that the polls may not hold after all. But others, particularly those who participated, are satisfied with the process.
16 political parties including the PDP had boycotted the election alleging plot by the state government to manipulate the process in favour of the All Progressives Congress.
