The federal government has extended the prerogative of mercy to 159 persons who were convicted for various offences against the state.

The National Council of State approved the pardon during a meeting on Thursday, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The council rejected pardon for former Bank PHB Managing Director, Francis Atuche.

Mr. Atuche was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment in June 2021, for stealing more that N25 billion.

HOMELAND NEWS gathered the former governor of Plateau state, Joshua Dariye, who was given a 14-year jail term in 2018 over a N1.1 billion corruption charge, may have been granted pardon.

Mr. Dariye who is a member of the APC, got his sentence reduced to 10 years by the Court of Appeal, a judgment that was upheld by the Supreme Court.

He is expected to be a free man any moment from now.

In the meantime, the federal government will confer National Award to 434 Nigerians who distinguished themselves in their various field of endeavour.
