Despite what appears like public outrage, the Senate Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission has begun the screening of Lauretta Onochie and other nominees for appointment as National Commissioners.
Civil rights groups, political parties and opinion leaders had criticized the nomination of the President’s aide into a body meant to be neutral.
Ms Onochie is a Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on social media and has been actively defensive of the administration.
Those who are opposed to her appointment insist that her partisanship makes her unqualified to be an INEC’s national commissioner
By Thursday afternoon, Ms Onochie and other nominees are already before the senate for the ritual of screening.
