The conflict between the Enugu state Executive and Legislatives arms of government have continued to deepen as both sides seem resolute to push ahead with their stands.
In the early hours of Tuesday, hundreds of supporters of Governor Sullivan Chime, took to the streets of the state capital in protest to the impeachment moves against the Governor by 15 members of the house led by the embattled speaker, Eugene Odo.
The supporters who stormed the House of Assembly complex could not gain entrance as the gates were met under lock and key due to the presence of heavily armed policemen who had since the early hours of the day, barricaded the entrance.
The protesters were later addressed by the State Deputy Governor at the Government house. They demanded that the Governor be allowed to complete his tenure which runs out on May 29, adding that the Eugene Odo led group lacks the power to impeach the Governor as he has since been removed as speaker.
But the embattled speaker told HOMELAND NEWS that the move to impeach Governor Chime is long overdue based on financial recklessness and impropriety on the part of the Governor.
He accused the Governor of abuse of his office as manifested in the use of the police to stop them, state lawmakers, from gaining access into the legislative complex. He insisted that he remains the speaker.
Coming days will be critical in determining how the transition to the next government will play out in the state even as both sides continue to stick to their grounds.
