All security outfits and vigilante groups have been banned from bearing fire arms in Imo state. They are also asked to return all the fire arms in their possessions to the police station nearest to them within 2 weeks.
The ban was announced in owerri by the state commissioner of police, Mister Ali Abdulmajid while addressing 82 officers who had completed a six weeks intensive training in various aspects of policing and crime fighting.
The commissioner said that with the electioneering campaigns around the corner, the state police command is wary of the need to put in place a crack team of well trained police officers to handle the challenges that is envisaged during this period. He warned that he will not condone any act of thuggery and violence during the period.
He went further to challenge the officers to bring to full use their wealth of experience gotten from the training to bear with the main objective of neutralizing all groups or criminal gangs that might forment trouble or cause a breach of public peace within and around the state.
The police boss while reassuring the people of their safety and that of their properties, he thanked them for their support which he said have helped the police to record tremendous successes in arrests and investigations in the state.
The officers have since been deployed to all the nooks and crannies of the state.
