Unknown gunmen are on rampage again in Imo state and this time, they killed a police officer and burnt down a Divisional Headquarters in Arondizuogu.

Arondizuogu is one of the popular town in Ideato Local Government Area of the state.

The assailants who struck at the early hours of Tuesday, left the Divisional Police Officer with a broken skull and destroyed the Sienna bus used by the police station as operational vehicle and the DPO’s personal SUV.

The police spokesperson for the command, Michael Abattam, who confirmed the incident said that the Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Hussaini, had ordered “an investigation into the ugly incident.”

On Monday, soldiers struck at Awomama in Oru East Local Government Area, burning down several properties.

The military invasion was triggered by the killing of a soldier at the Isheke Junction by some yet to be identified gunmen.

Properties burnt include a hotel, residential buildings and shops.

Governor Hope Uzodinma has condemned the killing of the soldier and the burning down of people’s properties.

A statement by the commissioner for Information, Declan Emelumba, says the government is shocked and dismayed over the events.

The statement added that the governor has ordered an investigation into the cause and consequence of the crisis.

“Government condemns the murder of a soldier by the so-called unknown gunmen. Certainly, this soldier who was on a legitimate duty to ensure free flow of traffic and to protect lives and property on this fateful Monday of November 22nd, did not deserve to die such a gruesome death.

“On the other hand, Government deprecates reports of wanton destruction of property visited on the community by aggrieved soldiers. The indiscriminate burning of residential and businesses premises of innocent citizens was not an appropriate response since two wrongs will never make a right. Government has good reasons to believe that there is more to the sad event than meets the eyes.

“Consequently, His Excellency, Senator Hope Uzodinma, the Executive Governor of Imo State has ordered a high-powered investigation into the incident to unravel the cause of the crisis and the attendant loss of life and property,” the statement states in part.
