No fewer than four policemen were killed when gunmen attacked a checkpoint in Obeagu-Amechi community in Enugu South local government on Wednesday night.
Residents claim they counted four bodies of slain policemen after the attack, with some passers-by sustained bullet wounds.
Enugu Police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe confirmed the attack but said he present the casualty figure later.
The state Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi had visited families of the slain policemen and promised to give their wives automatic employment in the state civil service.
Enugu and other states in the South East have seen relative peace in the past few months after weeks of violence occasioned by attacks by unknown gunmen.
No group has claimed responsibility for the killings but fingers have been pointing at the Eastern Security Network, said to be the armed group of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra.
