Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, has praised the National U-23 team for defeating the Japanese counterpart in the Rio 2016 opener on Thursday.
This is coming barely 24 hours after the minister shamelessly disowned the team that was stranded in Atalanta, USA after completing their training tour ahead of the games.
While responding to why the Dream Team VI had a disorganised travel arrangement to the extent that the team was still in the US, a day before their first match at the Olympic games, the minister said;
“Our under 23 team suffering in the United States of Nigeria (America), who took them there? What are they there for?…Because they are under 23 and they went to US, now they are having problem, does that become our business.”
In a swift turn around, the minister posted congratulatory message on his facebook wall, describing the players as “not only showed resilience in the face of adversity, but demonstrated patrotism.”
Such inconsistencies have become the hallmark of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, who under his watch, pilgrimage was classified as personal activity of pilgrims, not deserving government intervention. But in a quick summersault, the federal government has moved to subsidise purchase of foreign exchange for pilgrims by 50% (N197 against N390).
