The continued effort to make Anambra state free of crime was given a boost over the weekend with the launch of State Security Fund in Lagos. The governor of the state, Willie Obiano said his administration is committed to making the state investors’ destination.
Five months into office, Governor Willie Obiano has not hidden his zero tolerance against kidnapping, Armed robbery and other criminal activities. According to him, the state of insecurity in the past has forced many goodwill and businessmen of Anambra state extraction to invest in other states including Lagos.
Addressing this setback was the reason for bringing citizens of the state and their friends to seek their support in nipping the problem in the bud.
Within these months of the Obiano administration in the state, hundreds of criminal elements have been dug out of their hiding places by the security agencies, dozens of kidnapped victims freed in the process.
Demolition of criminal hideouts in the state have become regular occurrence though many citizens argue that the state could work out a different approach to treating seized property than outright demolition which they consider as wasteful.
The state government had within the period provided impressive support for security agencies in the state including the Police, Department of State Security, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, etc.
Frequent raids by the anti-drug agency in the past three months have broken down some drug cartels and their distribution channels. The highest success in this regard was recorded in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
Watchers of affairs of the state had wondered how long the state government will remain focused in its drive to transform the state through adequate security of life and property before it gets derailed by winds of politics. Recent Supreme Court judgment affirming the election of the Governor may have added desired impetus to his commitment of providing good governance to the people.
Keen observers view the government’s call for citizens’ participation in sustaining security as crucial to socio-economic and political growth in the state. They said with a crime-free environment, business activities will grow in Leaps and bounds.
